World Energy Outlook 2016
By
Laszlo Varró
Chief Economist of International Energy Agency (IEA)
Welcome address: Michael Ignatieff, CEU President and Rector
Chair: Aleh Cherp, Environmental Sciences and Policy
World Energy Outlook (WEO) is the world’s most authoritative source of analysis and projections of energy demand and supply as well as their impact on economic development, energy security and the environment. WEO 2016 focuses on the radical shifts in the energy sector implied by the Paris Agreement on climate change. It assesses the sufficiency of national climate commitments for the 2 °C and 1.5 °C climate stabilisation targets and their implications for fossil fuels and other energy industries. The publication also looks into linkages between energy and water, which are pivotal for the realisation of many climate and development goals.
Laszlo Varró holds the post of the IEA Chief Economist and leads the IEA Economic and Investment Office since January 2016. Prior to assuming this role, he served as IEA Head of Gas, Coal and Power Markets and worked on a variety of IEA programmes. Untill 2011 he was the Director for Strategy Development at MOL Group and prior to that the Head of Price Regulation at the Hungarian Energy Office.
Founded in 1974, the IEA was initially designed to help countries co-ordinate a collective response to major disruptions in the supply of oil. While this remains a key aspect of its work, the IEA has evolved and expanded. It is at the heart of global dialogue on energy, providing authoritative statistics and analysis. The IEA examines the full spectrum of energy issues and advocates policies that will enhance the reliability, affordability and sustainability of energy in its 29 member countries and beyond.
