European Energy Security: From Diversification Options towards the Integrated Energy Market

The presentation will provide an overview of the evolution of energy security considerations in the European discussion on energy policy. Energy security has been one of the driving factors in European energy policy manifesting in the progress made on the Southern Gas Corridor initiative. At the same time, achievements made towards market integration have had a larger impact on energy security than expected. This has made the integrated market the best attraction for any potential new supplier and the best answer to energy security challenges.
Dr. Anita Orbán is the Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary. Previously she was the Director of Constellation Energy Institute, a think tank facilitating cooperation in the Central Eastern European energy sector. She is the author of the book Power, Energy and the New Russian Imperialism (CT: Praeger, 2008). Between 2005 and 2008 she served as the Executive Vice President of the Budapest-based International Centre for Democratic Transition (ICDT). Dr. Orbán earned her PhD degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston in 2007.
