The Peasant War in Germany by Friedrich Engels : 125 Years After
A discussion led by J. Bak on the work of F. Engels. Engels's study is important because it is the founding work in a tradition of historical analysis concerning the Peasant War. It also demonstrates the important connections between religion & economic forces in historical events. As a study of the transformation to bourgeois capitalism in Europe, it has many implications for twentieth-century peasant revolutions as well. Rainir Wohlfeil (U of Hamburg) points out that Engels's work has been taken to exemplify how a peasant revolution can be a bourgeois movement but there is little empirical basis for this assumption. This work remains important because of its "canonical validity" despite empirical shortcomings. Ernst Engelberg (Academy of Sciences, Berlin) replies that the term bourgeois has been used by Engels in a simplified sense to allow historical comparisons. The empirical basis of Engels's & Marx's work is well known & Marxists have continued to do empirical work along these lines. Historians are always working from an ideological basis & this is not grounds for ignoring Engels's contributions to historical studies. Gunter Vogler (Humboldt U, Berlin) also defends the empirical basis for Engels's work although he acknowledges its propagandistic aims as well. The Peasant War was clearly a revolution unlike many of its predecessors. Similarities between the Reformation & the Peasant War demonstrate the way the two movements appealed to the interests of the Ur burghers, thus having a bourgeois character. Edward Friedman (U of Wisconsin, Madison) compares Engels's detailed regional discussion of the Peasant War to the Chinese case. Engels's interpretations of peasant movements, though biased & mistaken at points, nonetheless serve to give insight to conditions in a different sociocultural context. Kurt Greussing & Hans G. Kippenberg (Free U, Berlin) use the Iranian example to demonstrate the alternatives available to contemporary peasant movements. Differentiation in Ru society must be considered for a fruitful analysis of how peasant movements fit into the context of class development & the world market. M. Brenner.
